In this collection are books inscribed in the 1920s by William Allen White to Phyllis A. Hughes (Mrs. Keith) Lawton, whose father Bowmer Q. Hughes worked for thirty years as a linotype operator for White's . Included are letters from Phyllis's father to her mother in 1918, commenting on the influenza epidemic and Mr. White's departure with his son William Lindsay White for the Paris Peace Conference. Also included are a group photograph of William Allen White with his employees and letters to Phyllis and R. Keith Lawton from William Lindsay White in 1950 and 1951. Emporia Gazette Gazette

Phyllis Ann (Mrs. R. Keith) Lawton was born in Emporia, Kansas to Bowmer Q. and Ruth Ann Spangler Hughes. Her father worked for thirty years as a linotype operator for William Allen White's Emporia Gazette. As a reviewer for Reader's Digest, White received several books each year, which he kept and gave as Christmas presents to children of his employees at the Gazette 's annual Christmas ball.
